I went to Akita last autumn of November 2024. It was really healing- the forest quiet walks and middle of nowhere onsens, slow pace and hospitality is amazing. I was comforted in so many ways. And their Sake is wonderful too!
Thank you for your commen! That sounds like such an amazing trip! Akita really is the perfect place to slow down and just soak it all in. And I’ve heard great things about the sake, but the last time I went, I wasn’t old enough to drink yet. I’ll definitely try it next time! Thanks for sharing—I hope people see your comment and try sake too!
The northern side of Chokai-san is also amazing, lots of beautiful waterfalls like Naso-no-Shirataki, Moto-taki, and Hottai-no-taki, not to mention the ‘99 islands’ in Nikaho! But this is still a great list, thank you!
Thank you for your comment! There are so many incredible places that I even don't know. I'm actually looking forward to collaborating with you one day on Yamagata! I’ve actually been to Tsuruoka before—I read your article on spider silk fiber, but my visit was for a science research presentation at Keio in Tsuruoka, when I was in high school! I still remember the beautiful ocean. When I write about Yamagata someday, I’d love to interview you!
I am surprised there is no mention of Oga Peninsula. The Oga Peninsula is my favorite place in Akita and its Namahage tradition (and museum) is a truly unique cultural experience.
Wow added to my wishlist, thank you!
Thank you again for your comment! Same here—I’ve been to Akita before, but it’s still on my wishlist too!
